Streetlights

Street light

Whanganui’s streetlights are turned on at night by Powerco sending a signal through the powerlines – this activates 40 switches which control streetlights in various areas of our district.

Streetlights out

If streetlights are out, please fill out the report a problem form or call the council any time on our 24/7 number to report the issue: 06 349 0001. Our after-hours service will notify a contractor who will assess the problem.

If multiple streetlights are out in an area, it means the signal hasn’t come through properly due to an issue with relay equipment. In this case, our contractor will contact Powerco to ask them to resend the signal to switch the streetlights on.

If a single streetlight is out, it’s likely an issue with either council-owned or Powerco-owned equipment and the contractor will arrange for repairs to be made.
