For the 2023/24 financial year (starting in July 2023) the council is making a one-off rates remission (reduction) of up to $500 available for households facing a rates rise higher than $700.

Whanganui has many attractive parks, reserves and open spaces which beautify the district and give residents and visitors a huge range of opportunities for engaging with the outdoors.
Whanganui boasts a number of iconic and nationally significant parks such as Virginia Lake, Kowhai Park and Cooks Gardens and Bason Botanic Gardens, as well as numerous small parks and playgrounds which help create a sense of community in our neighbourhoods.
Whanganui District Council also provides ground space to meet the community’s requirements for organised sports. We have 113 hectares of sports grounds available.
