Waste Plan
Whanganui District Council’s Waste Management and Minimisation Plan 2021–2027 is a guiding document that sets out our district’s approach to tackling waste efficiently and responsibly.
All councils in New Zealand are required to have a Waste Management and Minimisation Plan (WMMP) in place and review it at least once every six years. The plan outlines how to achieve effective and efficient waste minimisation and management within the district.
The council is currently reviewing Whanganui’s Waste Management and Minimisation Plan.
The current plan has driven the introduction of kerbside recycling and the ongoing expansion of resource recovery services across the district. However, Whanganui still produces significantly more waste per person than the national average – and with changing national policy direction, population growth and rising costs, it’s important that the next plan is focused on the future. The new plan will ensure our waste system and services are best suited to our community’s needs.
What’s happened so far:
As part of this process, we’ve recently completed a Waste Assessment examining the district’s current waste situation, future demand, and possible options for the next plan.
This included early engagement with key stakeholders and partners, as well as a community and business survey.
Next steps:
Community feedback will play an important role in shaping the next Plan, including balancing cost, convenience, environmental outcomes and future investment. We will have more information on how our community can get involved soon.
