Strategy for Whanganui – Rautaki mō Whanganui

Durie Hill War Memorial Tower

The Strategy for Whanganui – Rautaki mō Whanganui was developed in partnership with Hapū, Iwi, stakeholders and the wider community defining a fresh, future-focused direction for our district.

Built on the voices and aspirations of Whanganui people, it sets five enduring goals — Grow, Build, Protect, Activate, and Celebrate Whanganui — a guide to where we as a community want to go and how to get there. The strategy reflects local priorities such as supporting housing development, enhancing infrastructure, revitalising the environment, strengthening economic opportunity, and promoting the district’s unique culture and heritage.

Clear Goals for a Stronger Whanganui

The strategy centres around five goals that will shape the district’s future:

Acknowledging Hapū

At the start of the Leading Edge Strategy review, a Rōpū (group) of Hapū representatives from across the Whanganui district worked alongside council staff and the wider community, sharing their perspectives on wellbeing and shaping the council’s understanding. Their kōrero (conversations and discussions) has strengthened the foundation of the Strategy for Whanganui, ensuring that Hapū voices are reflected in this work. The wellbeing priorities identified through this kōrero will also be progressed through Toitū te Whānau Trust once established.
