Whanganui District Council’s Strategy for Whanganui – Rautaki mō Whanganui, shaped by the voices and aspirations of our community, sets out five long-term goals for our district: to Grow, Build, Protect, Activate and Celebrate Whanganui. This strategy gives us a shared direction and guides the way we plan, invest and make decisions for the future.

Alongside this new direction, we’ve refreshed the Whanganui District Council brand to reflect our strategic focus, celebrate our local identity and connect clearly and consistently across everything we do.

Our brand story

Whanganui is no ordinary place. It’s layered with story. A centre of whakapapa and creativity, of innovation and identity. The awa is ever-present in the life of this rohe. It shapes how we understand, care for and relate to each other and our environment.

You can feel its energy in the rhythm of daily life and it lights up everyone who calls Whanganui home.

It lives in our district’s reputation for art and design, our openness to innovation and our outstanding built environment and heritage.

This is our home, not just the place we work. At Whanganui District Council, we celebrate Whanganui’s energy, activating it to build a district where we work in unison with Hapū and Iwi, creativity is alive and te taiao is respected and restored.

Everything we do is about making life better for the people who call Whanganui home. It’s in the essentials like keeping our roads safe, joint environmental strategies and managing rates.

We’re committed to showing up, listening and learning. Step by step, alongside our people, through shared mahi and connection, we’re shaping a vibrant district that is uniquely Whanganui.
