Central Government

Whanganui District Council 101 Guyton Street

Central government has introduced reforms that will impact on the Whanganui community. They include:

  • Local Water Done Well - a reform of how three waters services (drinking water, stormwater and wastewater) are delivered

Local Water Done Well

Local Water Done Well is the Government’s policy to address New Zealand’s long-standing water infrastructure challenges

Simplifying local government

The government is changing the way local government is organised in New Zealand, with councils moving towards new arrangements that bring regional and district/city council functions together.

Better Off Funding

In 2021, government funding known as Better Off Funding became available to councils for projects with lasting community benefits. This meant Whanganui could access central government funding for a range of projects meeting the Department of Internal Affairs criteria.
