Additional information

Some of these providers offer a pay per pick-up service which can be convenient and more cost-effective for households that don't produce a lot of waste.

Many of these service providers also offer a regular collection for garden waste (or ‘green waste’), which can often save households money. The cost of a garden waste collection is significantly cheaper by weight than general rubbish. See more on our green waste webpage.

Rubbish collection areas and days

Rubbish collections are generally provided on the days shown in the map below. Note services may differ from what is shown here.

Transfer stations

Dispose responsibly of excess household rubbish by taking it to a transfer station. There are two locations where you can dispose of rubbish:

  • Re:Sort Transfer Station in Liffiton Street, operated by Low Cost Bins. Also has a green waste area for separated garden waste to be composted – which will save you money on disposal costs.

  • Whanganui Resource Recovery Centre accepts bags of rubbish. It also accepts recyclable items like electronics, household recycling, polystyrene, waste oil, car batteries, whiteware, tyres and garden waste.

If items are in good condition, consider donating or selling online instead of disposing of them.

You can save on disposal costs by separating recyclables and green waste from your load.
