Green waste includes lawn clippings, weeds, branches, leaves and hedge trimmings. These are valuable materials that can be used to make compost and create healthy soils.

When organic items like green waste and food scraps go to a landfill, they produce methane, a harmful greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change.

It’s better for the environment to compost green waste, either with a home compost system, a kerbside green waste collection service, or by taking it to one of the locations listed below.

The cost to drop off green waste is often cheaper than the general rubbish rate, so always separate your green waste from other rubbish. See websites below for pricing.

Note: Items such as flax, large branches, trees, soil and bamboo cannot be accepted in green waste at these locations.  Whanganui Resource Recovery Centre also cannot accept yucca or palms in green waste. 

These items have tough fibres which can damage the shredding equipment and break down slower. Concrete and rubble are not accepted in green waste. 
 

Green waste collection services 

A regular green waste collection helps reduce your waste to landfill and makes it easy to do the right thing with your garden waste. It’s also cheaper to dispose of garden waste in a green waste wheelie bin collection than in your general rubbish bin.

Food waste collection services 

Easy Earth offers a weekly food waste collection service for households and businesses. It also offers a drop-off option for households with two locations in central Whanganui.  

 

Home composting

Composting your garden materials and food scraps is a great way to reuse these items to enrich soil and reduce your environmental impact.

There are numerous composting resources online to help you get started. Composting systems include both DIY and store-bought options. As well as a traditional compost bins, other methods are worm farms, bokashi bins, in-ground worm farms and tumbler compost bins.
