Whanganui District Council is making postal voting a little easier for the upcoming local elections.

Voting papers will start appearing in letter boxes between Friday 16 and Wednesday 21 September. Completed votes need to be returned using the provided envelope via the postal system. Ballot bins will also be placed in high traffic areas in our community to provide an additional option.

Voters can place their votes in bins in the following locations between Monday 19 September and 12 noon on Saturday 8 October:

  • The council’s customer service centre at 101 Guyton Street
  • Gonville Library, 44 Abbot Street
  • Davis Library, 1 Pukenamu Drive, Pukenamu Queens Park
  • Splash Centre, 220 London Street, Springvale Park
  • Four Square Riverview, 59 Anzac Parade
  • New World Whanganui, 374 Victoria Avenue
  • Countdown, 433 Victoria Avenue
  • Trafalgar Square, Taupo Quay

Pop-up voting bins will also be available at the following sites:

  • Sea Dogs Galley, Kai Iwi 23 and 30 September, and 7 October, 5.30pm -7.30pm
  • Outside Clifflife, Rangiora Street, Castlecliff, 25 September and 2 October, 10.00am and 1.00pm

Democracy Services Manager Kate Barnes says the council extends its thanks to those businesses supporting the election process by hosting a bin.

“If you are dropping your vote in a post box, make sure it is in the mail by Tuesday 4 October to ensure the Electoral Officer receives it on time. After this date you can drop your vote off in one of our bins instead.

“If you do not receive your papers by 21 September, or you enrolled after 12 August, you can come to the council and cast a special vote. It takes around 10 minutes, and we will be extending our open hours the week before voting closes to receive special votes.”

Rural voters can give their envelope to their postie as usual. Post box locations are available on NZ Post’s website nzpost.co.nz/.

Voting closes at 12 noon on Saturday 8 October. Voters will receive a candidate information booklet with voting papers and candidate profiles can also be viewed online at votewhanganui.nz
