Whanganui District Council is seeking passionate local arts advocates to be assessors for the Creative Communities Scheme arts funding programme. This Creative New Zealand-funded initiative is administered by local councils across the country.

The council’s community arts co-ordinator, Anique Jayasinghe, says, “In just the past year alone, the scheme has supported more than 1300 participants from artists to larger community groups to deliver arts events to over 7900 locals.

“These events have ranged from West African drumming workshops to illustration workshops, Diwali celebrations, Pasifika youth art exhibitions, inclusive dance classes for adults with disabilities, orchestral concerts and children’s glass art workshops.

"Our team of voluntary assessors play a crucial role in helping fantastic ideas like these become a reality.”

The scheme in Whanganui is now in need of three more assessors to support the assessment of applications, which happens two to three times a year. Assessors ensure funding processes are fair, democratic and representative of our diverse community.

To reflect the diverse ethnic and arts communities that make up Whanganui’s vibrant arts sector, we’re seeking people from a range of backgrounds.

Anique Jayasinghe says, “This is the perfect opportunity for people who have arts experience, local connections and cultural knowledge to contribute in a meaningful way.

"People with experience in music, visual arts, theatre and/or sound production would be particularly helpful, and people of all ages are welcome to apply.”

To apply to be a Creative Communities Scheme assessor, complete the online form here or pick up a paper application form at any of the district and community libraries.

Applications close at midnight on Friday, 4 March 2022. For more details, or to nominate someone you know, contact Anique Jayasinghe, the council’s community arts co-ordinator, on 06 349 3086 or email: anique.jayasinghe@whanganui.govt.nz
