Whanganui’s stock pound is being relocated to Montgomery Reserve, on the corner of Montgomery Road and Great North Road.

Whanganui District Council Compliance Team Leader, Warrick Zander says “With the relocation, Whanganui will have a more accessible facility, fit to hold impounded stock.”

The previous stock pound was located in Fordell, which had poor access and was not used for many years, due to its lack of suitability. The move was necessary as sheep, pigs and goats had to be put in the dog pound backyard, which was an unsuitable environment.

The new stock pound is purpose built, with three separate paddocks that have trees for shelter and a yard for the animals to roam. Stock that can be impounded at the new stock pound includes pigs, goats, cattle, sheep, horses, deer, asses and mules.

The Riding for the Disabled (RDA) horses have been grazing the new stock pound paddocks to maintain the grass. RDA will also monitor the stock pound and the impounded stock.

Fees for the impoundment of stock can be found on our website, at: www.whanganui.govt.nz/stock-pound
