The council is temporarily closing the Mowhanau Lookout Carpark on Sunset Parade, from January 30, 2026 under Part 7(1)c of the bylaw protect the safety of persons or property, after finding new erosion to the cliff wall.
The site has been a Freedom Camping area since 2021. Following a bylaw review and public consultation last year, it was confirmed as a Freedom Camping area in the 2025 bylaw.
Council staff will investigate the stability of the land and reassess the suitability of this site as a Freedom Camping area.
