Wanganui District Council Infrastructure Manager Mark Hughes says the clean-out of the wastewater treatment plant’s main pond is coming to an end.
“We currently have two loaders on site helping to remove the last of the sludge from the bottom of the pond and we expect this work will be completed by the end of the month,” Mr Hughes said.
“The plant will then be ready for Hawkins Infrastructure to establish on site in early October to begin construction of the new wastewater treatment plant.”
The new plant will incorporate part of the main pond from the current plant in the new configuration. The pond and tanks will be covered and the sludge regularly removed so there will not be ongoing odour problems.
The upgraded plant is designed to cope with our district’s domestic and industrial waste and has the capacity to cater for future growth.
