Media release #4 Wanganui District weather event - 1.30pm 20 June 2015

Published on 20 June 2015

Flood waters

Sewage and stormwater spills are being reported throughout the district so all flood waters should be considered contaminated. Please keep away from creeks and other flooded areas.

Water supply

The city water supply pressure is being reduced. Power is out to the Kai Iwi bores and may not be restored for some time. Other bores are operating but residents are asked to conserve water.

Matarawa Stream

The Matarawa Stream has risen rapidly and is affecting properties in its catchment. Volunteers are going door to door in the Anzac Parade/Nile Street area to advise residents of the situation.

Kowhai Park is closed and stormwater and sewage will be spilling into the park to lessen the impact on nearby properties.

Roads

There are extensive slips around the district. Due to the status of the state highways, contractors are currently unable to access many affected rural roads or get heavy equipment on site.

Driving conditions

People are urged to avoid any unnecessary travel and not to ‘rubberneck’. Any concerns about dangerous driving should be reported to the Whanganui Police. Manhole lids are popping so drivers should be cautious.

Traffic lights

Traffic lights are not operating at some major intersections due to the power outage. Drive with care and obey the give way rules.

Health

Whanganui District Health Board is asking any of its nursing staff who can get to the hospital and have a current APC to phone 021 404 699.
