Major work for Whanganui River Road

Three retaining walls will be constructed along the Whanganui River Road during September to December 2016.

They are in a section of the road between the Gentle Annie/Aramoana and Parikino, starting about 4km from the intersection with State Highway 4.

The work is programmed to begin on Monday, September 19 and will involve significant disruption to traffic.

This is part of the ongoing repair work following the June 2015 flood event and is 100% funded by NZ Transport Agency. The contract has been awarded to ID Loader.

Because of the narrow road width, machinery will need to operate from the road to access the work site. This means the road will need to be closed for up to three hours at a time, temporarily blocking access for vehicles. The length of time of each closure is unavoidable as it will take two hours to drill each pile hole.

The opening and closing times for the road from Mondays to Saturdays (inclusive) are:

9.00am-12.00 noon – Closed
12.00 noon-12.30pm – Open
12.30pm–3.30pm – Closed
3.30pm-4.00pm – Open
4.00pm-6.00pm – Closed
6.00pm-6.30pm – Open
6.30pm-8.30pm – Closed

The closure times have been scheduled to try to minimise inconvenience for residents travelling to work and school. The road will be open at night, on Sundays and on public holidays. Emergency services will have access at all times. All road closures will be completed before Christmas.

The work will cause disruption for people travelling on the road.

We appreciate your understanding and patience as we work through the huge task of reinstating the road for the benefit of locals and visitors.
