Fordell water supply - Boil Water Notice lifted
Published on 22 August 2025
Whanganui District Council has today lifted the boil water notice for all properties connected to the Fordell rural water supply. Taumata Arowai has been informed as part of this process.
Daily water testing carried out during the notice period has shown no signs of contamination, with clear results for E.coli and total coliforms.
As safety is the council’s top priority, a precautionary notice has been in place since 8 August 2025 while work was undertaken to put in a temporary supply to bypass the existing treated water reservoir.
If you have used your connection during this period for bathing, toilets etc you can now regularly use the water for drinking, preparing food, cooking, making up infant formula, handwashing, and cleaning teeth without taking any further action.
However, if you haven’t used the water connection during this time you may wish to flush your taps for 3-5 minutes to get rid of any water that may have been sitting in the pipes.
Senior engineering officer, Dave Rudolph, says that although work is still being carried out on the roof of the Fordell reservoir, temporary tanks have been set up and are providing safe water.
“We’re happy to announce that the boil water notice has been lifted, and we thank the Fordell community for their patience while the new tanks were installed.”
The next step in the process is to return the regular reservoir tank to service once the roof replacement is complete.
Council chief executive David Langford says the replacement of the Fordell water supply roof was already on the council’s work programme.
“Scaffolding is in place to protect to protect the permanent Fordell reservoir tank while contractors complete the roof replacement. We do not expect any further disruptions to the Fordell community.”
