The water supply upgrade along part of Airport Road is needed for the future growth of Whanganui, and is part of the resilience being built into the water network service for the growth of the Airport Road area.
The installation of a new water main will provide connectivity to Whanganui's wastewater treatment plant, Whanganui District Council's animal pound, the Wanganui Pistol Club as well as provide a potential future connection to Whanganui Airport and other properties on Airport Road.
The water supply upgrade work in this area has been divided into three stages. The first stage from Taupo Quay to Wikitoria Road was completed in July 2022. The scope of this project from Landguard Road to the wastewater treatment plant along Airport Road is regarded as stage 2. Stage two was completed at the end of April 2023.
Stage 3 from the wastewater treatment plant to Whanganui Airport is planned to be completed in the next financial year.
Under the second stage, 1.1 km of new 180mm PE water main will be constructed from Landguard Road to the wastewater treatment plant along Airport Road’s south side by using the directional drilling methodology.
Note: New sewer mains will also be laid as one of the growth projects from Whanganui Prison / Department of Corrections.
