Notice is given pursuant to section 28 of the Local Electoral Act 2001 (the Act), that Whanganui District Council resolved on 4 August 2026 to retain the First Past the Post (FPP) electoral system for the 2028 triennial election.
Whanganui District Council electors have the right to demand a poll on the electoral system to be used at the 2028 and 2031 triennial election to countermand the use of FPP, in accordance with section 29 of the Act.
The choice is between the First Past the Post (FPP) and the Single Transferable Vote (STV) electoral systems.
A valid demand for a poll must be:
- Made in writing
- Signed by at least 5 percent of eligible electors of Whanganui District Council. This will require a minimum of 1,692 elector signatures; and
- Delivered to the Whanganui District Council office, 101 Guyton Street, Whanganui by 5pm 11 December 2026 (for the outcome of the poll to apply for the 2028 and 2031 triennial elections of the Whanganui District Council)
- Every elector who signs a demand must also set out in it their full name and the address for which they are qualified as an elector of Whanganui District Council
- Should a valid demand for a poll be received by 11 December 2026, a poll will be held by 28 March 2027 on whether the FPP or STV electoral system will be used for the next two triennial elections (2028 and 2031) of the Whanganui District Council.
