The Whanganui Alliance will be applying a new chip seal to the road surface in St Hill Street between Dublin Street and Ingestre Street, with work expected to begin at 7.00am on Monday, 28 September 2026.
Before this work can be done, the road surface must be rebuilt as it’s badly worn or failing and needs more than a simple repair. This work is part of the council’s annual summer roading programme and will be done between 7.00am and 6.00pm. It is weather-dependent and is expected to be completed by Friday, 23 October 2026.
What’s happening?
The work includes:
- Excavation of the existing pavement (road surface) to a depth of approximately 300mm
- Placement of 300mm of new aggregate
- Shaping and compaction to finished levels
- Resurfacing with a chip seal surface
Traffic and access
To keep contractors, road users and residents safe, St Hill Street (between Dublin Street and Ingestre Street) will be restricted to one-lane traffic only and traffic management will be in place. Traffic and residents will have right of way from Dublin Street heading down St Hill Street, with NO access from Ingestre Street (please see the following map).
Residents and businesses will continue to have access and businesses will remain open as usual, but NO parking will be available on this section of St Hill Street during the road works. The shared pathway and footpaths will remain open for pedestrians and cyclists.
Any necessary detours will be clearly signposted – please keep to any temporary speed limits.
There may be some delays, so please allow extra time for your travel. We will do our best to minimise any disruption.
Thanks for your patience.
What to expect
- Because of the nature of the works and the machinery involved, you may experience some noise, vibration, and dust, particularly during compaction activities.
- The road and footpaths will be swept between 48 hours and one week after the reseal, depending on traffic volumes. We will complete any necessary road markings at the appropriate time.
