Mayor Annette Main says she’s pleased Wanganui District Council has been selected to take part in the online voting trial for next year’s local authority elections.
“When Local Government New Zealand called for registrations of interest earlier this year, we felt it was a good fit for our council in terms of our digital strategy and Smart 21 status,” Mayor Main said.
“While traditional voting methods would still be used as well, it provides an alternative for those who would prefer to vote online. We are fortunate to have an increasingly well-connected community and the ability for people who do not have access at home to use the free internet available through our libraries.
“This is not a done deal. There are still conditions to meet – Cabinet needs to agree to a trial going ahead and then we would need to meet the requirements set by Cabinet. We’re confident we can meet those requirements and hope to be selected to be part of the trial.”
