Mayor Annette Main says “a huge thank you” needs to go to the volunteers and community groups involved in ensuring major events such as the 20th anniversary of the New Zealand Opera School and Week, and the second Whanganui Vintage Weekend, were a huge success.
Numerous groups and individuals were involved in running not only these two events but also a three-day fishing contest, the Cooks Classic athletics event, the speedway and the Vintage Car rally, all leading up to and during Wellington Anniversary Weekend.
“When we have such a strong community spirit with people and groups who really care about making things happen here, this not only ensures those who live here have a wealth of choices, but as well we are adding to our reputation as a place for visitors to enjoy,” Mayor Main said.
“All of these events would not have happened without the hours of support from individuals and businesses.
“While taking part and attending the events which happen here, it is clear to me that people are generous in helping to develop the kind of events which make us feel good about our district. Our challenge now is to keep up the momentum with a range of events which become ‘must-do’ activities for visitors.”
