Restoration of museum mosaic underway to honour design and artistry

Whanganui District Council has started restoration work on the much-loved mosaic located on the Whanganui Regional Museum, next to the Davis Lecture Theatre.
The mosaic was designed by one of New Zealand’s foremost mid-century architects and Whanganui locals, Don Wilson and Eddie Belchambers, as part of the museum’s significant 1968 extension. The extension included the Māori Court and Davis Lecture Theatre, as well as a striking decorative feature, the mosaic.
The architects worked with local tradesperson, Basil Benseman, whose eye for detail and tireless work ethic saw the completion of the nearly 26,000 Italian glass tile mosaic constructed in just over 10 months.
Don Wilson and Basil Benseman had worked together previously, but the mosaic was a unique addition to the museum build, possibly inspired by Wilson’s travels through Mexico where he observed mosaics on civic buildings.
Fifty-seven years later, local mosaic artist, Louise Herdman is working with the council to restore the mosaic. Herdman brings years of expertise and passion for mosaics to ensure the original design is maintained and preserved for future generations.
Sarah O’Hagan, the council’s chief strategy officer, says, "This mosaic is an important part of Whanganui’s cultural identity. Its restoration not only honours the craftsmanship of those involved but also reaffirms our commitment to protecting and celebrating our unique artistic legacy as a UNESCO City of Design."
Work on the mosaic began in May and this final phase is scheduled for completion in November. The project represents an investment in maintaining the city’s cultural assets and highlights the importance of collaboration between the council, contractors, local artisans, and the museum.
Whanganui Regional Museum director, Bronwyn Labrum, says she is delighted that the significance of this unique public artwork has been recognised and invested in.
“It is an integral part of the history of the museum and reflects the importance of the building and those who designed it. It will be a joy to our regular hirers of the Davis Lecture Theatre and public art supporters everywhere,” says Dr Labrum.
Anique Jayasinghe, the council’s community activator, added, "It’s wonderful to see the mosaic come back to life with every tile restored. Working with Louise and other contractors to ensure the community has a chance to reconnect with this artwork has been invaluable. We look forward to sharing the results in November.”
Despite research, archival records about the original artwork are scant. If anyone in the community has information about this mosaic by Don Wilson, Eddie Belchambers and Basil Benseman, please contact the council on 349 0001 or email.
Whanganui District Council and the Whanganui Regional Museum invite the community to follow the progress of the restoration over the coming weeks.
