Popular Airbnb workshop returns to help locals tap into tourism boom

After a successful event last year, Whanganui & Partners is bringing back its popular Airbnb holiday-home workshop – aimed at helping homeowners turn vacant or spare space into extra income.
The free workshop, to be held on Thursday 26 June, from 6.00pm–7:30pm, will provide practical advice and inspiration for anyone curious about listing a place to stay, a sleepout or home on a short-term accommodation platform.
Whanganui’s profile as a visitor destination continues to grow, but the region still faces a significant shortage of accommodation especially during peak events and summer months.
“We’ve seen firsthand that our region’s visitor economy is limited only by the number of beds we can offer,” says Paul Chaplow, Whanganui District Council Strategic Lead Visitor Industries. “Peer-to-peer accommodation plays a crucial role in meeting that demand – and workshops like this are about empowering locals to be part of that.”
This year’s workshop will walk attendees through the essentials of how to set up a short-term accommodation space, key dos and don’ts, and how to stand out. It’s designed both for newcomers and for those already operating a listing who want to sharpen their approach.
The panel will feature a mix of voices with real-world experience in short-term hosting, including Tess Dwyer, who manages multiple local properties and brings valuable insight into what’s working in the current market. Panellists will help unpack the ins and outs of Airbnb, from setting up your space to understanding guest expectations and regional trends.
“Hosting on Airbnb can be a game changer, especially in a place like Whanganui where visitor demand is strong and consistent,” Dwyer says. “You’re not just listing a room – it’s about understanding what guests are looking for and creating a great experience. I’m looking forward to helping others get started, or level up what they’re already doing.”
Paul Chaplow says modern, character-filled or architecturally interesting homes tend to perform well, but all types of spaces can succeed with the right approach.
“If you’re house-proud, guest-friendly, and have a tidy space, there’s every chance you could turn it into something profitable and enjoyable.”
The workshop will be held at Davis Lecture Theatre, Whanganui Regional Museum. Registrations are essential. Visit discoverwhanganui.nz/workshop to reserve your spot.
