Media release #38 Wanganui District weather event - 9.30am 3 July 2015

The EQC has engaged Tonkin and Taylor to carry out an assessment on each of the properties that has been issued a Dangerous Building Notice.

Wanganui District Council Chief Executive Kevin Ross says that originally the Council advised owners they would need to engage a geotechnical engineer who would provide a list of recommendations to the home owner including what was required to have their Dangerous Building Notices removed. This process would run separately to their EQC claims.

“However, after discussions with EQC, it has been decided that rather than have another assessment done, and a process that runs parallel, the Council will accept the assessments provided by EQC,” Mr Ross said.

“However, as EQC won’t send us these assessments directly as they are between the property owners and EQC, property owners will need to provide the Council with a copy of their assessment.

“If we require further information in order to lift the notices, this will be the property owner’s responsibility and at that stage another geotechnical engineer may be required to provide further assessments. EQC won’t be involved in this part of the process. Therefore at this stage there is no need for property owners to separately engage the services of a geotechnical engineer, but it is important that the Council is provided with a copy of the assessments organised by EQC.”
