Mayor Annette Main is encouraging people to register their interest in arts short courses being developed by Whanganui UCOL.
“UCOL is keen to get feedback from our community about these courses that fall within the Certificate in Studio Art Practice and the best way of delivering them,” Mayor Main said.
“A survey was sent to the arts community last week asking for feedback about the short courses. We are encouraging those who received the survey to give their feedback. We are also really keen for everyone with an interest in the arts or further study to give their feedback to UCOL so it has a better understanding of what our community wants. UCOL can then tailor the courses to best suit the community’s needs.
“The courses could suit people who want to increase their skills in a specific studio-based art medium or technique. They could also help prepare practicing artists who wish to apply for degree level study in a creative area.”
The arts short courses are a result of Whanganui Joint Taskforce recommendations to consider interim activities that support arts education in the community. They also have the potential to also bring students from outside the district, which would potentially be a feeder for a new arts programme in 2015.
This initiative will start in semester two with the Certificate in Studio Art Practice Level 5. The programme aim is to complete structured art-based projects in specific mediums relevant to commercial visual arts practice.
Anyone who is interested in the arts short courses and would like to participate in the survey can email doug.watson@mediar.co.nz to request an invitation.
