Downer New Zealand Masters Games media release
The Downer New Zealand Masters Games return to Whanganui from 5–14 February 2027, bringing 10 days of sport, entertainment and community connection. The 2027 event marks the 38th New Zealand Masters Games, highlighting its long-standing place as one of Aotearoa’s most established sporting events.
As New Zealand’s largest and longest-running multisport festival, it attracts thousands of participants aged 20–90+ from across the country and overseas, competing in over 60 sports and coming together each evening at the Games Village in the heart of Whanganui.
More than just a sporting event, the Games are about keeping people active, connected and involved in sport for longer – uniting people and communities through sport and play.
Downer New Zealand has confirmed its return as Principal Sponsor, continuing its long-standing support of the Games since 2019.
“There’s something pretty special about the Masters Games - people giving it their all on the field during the day, then catching up with mates at the Games Village that night. In many ways, it’s not unlike our crews on the road - showing up, putting in the effort, and taking real pride in what they do,” says Downer’s Managing Director NZ, Murray Robertson.
“As a proud local employer, Downer sees first-hand the impact events like this have, bringing energy into Whanganui, supporting local jobs, and strengthening community connection. We’re proud to support an event that proves you’re never too old to get involved, and we’re looking forward to seeing the region come alive again in 2027.”
Games Manager Heather Cox said early interest is already building ahead of 2027.
“We’ve already had enquiries since the start of the year – from sports looking to be part of the programme, and from people across New Zealand and overseas wanting to lock in the dates.
“It’s a strong signal of momentum building towards another must-do Masters Games. We had over 4,600 registrations in 2025 – our goal is always to exceed that.
“We’re thrilled to have Downer back on board – our partnership continues to go from strength to strength, delivering real benefits for both our participants and the wider Whanganui community.”
Participants can expect a wide range of sports, a vibrant Games Village experience with local and headline entertainment, and the opportunity to challenge themselves while connecting with friends, old and new.
Further details, including the full sports programme, will be released in the lead up to registrations opening on 1 October 2026.
