Free temporary shuttle services in place for Durie Hill
Published on 10 March 2022
A free temporary shuttle service for Durie Hill residents is available while the Durie Hill elevator’s Anzac Parade entrance remains closed for repairs because of a slip.
Part of a bank near the entrance slipped last Thursday night (3 March), causing debris to fall onto the pathway used to access the elevator tunnel.
The Anzac Parade entrance will remain closed until at least Friday, 25 March 2022 to allow initial remedial work to be done safely so the elevator can fully reopen. This work includes the removal of loose material overhanging the bank. Several long-term options will be considered to stabilise the area.
A Whanganui District Council spokesperson says it is likely the bank became unstable after heavy rain from Cyclone Dovi in February.
While the Anzac Parade entrance is closed, the elevator will remain open to visitors and sightseers for rides from 10.00am daily from the upper Blyth Street entrance. There will be no through access to Anzac Parade.
In the meantime, a free shuttle operated by Tranzit Coachlines will run on weekdays during peak periods for school children and Durie Hill residents.
