Council opens applications for 2026/27 event funding

Whanganui District Council has opened applications for its 2026/27 event funding programme, inviting organisers to deliver bold, creative events that energise the district and attract visitors.
Events play a key role in bringing Whanganui to life, supporting the local economy and creating experiences locals are proud of and visitors remember.
Whanganui District Council Manager Visitor Experiences Sam Ryan says the council is committed to supporting events that showcase the district’s creativity and sense of place.
“Events are important because they bring people together and help tell Whanganui’s story. They create moments that strengthen community pride and leave a lasting impression on visitors.”
Funding is available for events held between 1 July 2026 and 30 June 2027, across sport, arts, culture and entertainment.
Strategic lead visitor experiences Paul Chaplow says event funding is an investment in both the visitor experience and the local economy.
“Supporting events helps attract visitors, support local businesses and reinforces Whanganui as a great place to live and visit.”
Whanganui is already home to well-known events such as Cemetery Circuit, Hoop Nation and Vintage Weekend, which draw large crowds and contribute to the district’s distinctive atmosphere.
“These events show what’s possible and demonstrate the scale and quality of events Whanganui can deliver,” Chaplow says.
The council is seeking a diverse mix of events and encourages both established organisers and those with new event ideas to apply.
“We know there are plenty of creative ideas out there,” Ryan says. “Whether it’s a long running event or something new, we encourage organisers to get in touch and explore how their idea could work in Whanganui.”
Given the competitive nature of the fund, applications must demonstrate strong planning, economic and social impact, and a pathway toward long-term sustainability. In addition to funding, the council provides marketing support and constructive feedback to help events grow and succeed.
“We work alongside organisers to help refine promotion, reach the right audiences and build long-term success,” Chaplow says.
The council welcomes funding applications and encourages anyone with a new event idea to reach out and discuss their vision.
Event organisers can apply for funding until Sunday, 31 May 2026. More information is available at https://www.whanganui.govt.nz/Community-and-Places/Funding-Opportunities/Event-Funding
