Community input needed on new Aramoho playground

Whanganui District Council is seeking input from the Aramoho community and key stakeholders on plans to build a new playground at Te Mana Park.
The council’s play advisor, Finn Boyle, says the council is excited to hear from tamariki and other Aramoho residents about their visions for the future of Te Mana Park.
“The area of Te Mana Park we are looking to build on has served many purposes in the community. Since the 1960s it has been a chicken farm, a sports field, and a community garden – now it’s time for a new lease on life as a playground.”
Aramoho residents and other stakeholders are invited to share their views in person at community BBQ events or via an online survey.
“We’re keen to hear community input on the playground so we can build something that’s fit for the Aramoho community for decades to come,” says Boyle.
Council parks officer, Clark Shaheen, says the park has a lot of space “and with cool features such as the Tutaeika stream and some big old plane trees, there are plenty of opportunities for interesting play activities there.”
Community BBQ events are being held so local residents can hear more and share their thoughts on the future of the park. BBQs are scheduled for Thursday, 30 October at 5:30pm and Sunday, 2 November at 3:30pm at Te Mana Park carpark at 40 Mitchell Street.
Those who can’t make it to one of the BBQ events can have their voice heard by completing the online survey which closes on Monday, 10 November: www.whanganui.govt.nz/playground
“Play is so core to childhood and child development,” Boyle says. “Of course, play doesn’t only happen in playgrounds but when we have the opportunity to dedicate a space and resources to it, we want to make the most of it.
“With no public playgrounds upriver from Peat Park, this will be a very welcome addition to the area.
“This is a chance to create an inspiring play space for our tamariki, our mokopuna and generations to come.”
