We're keen to hear what brings you into Whanganui's town centre, how you move around it and what you think would improve it.

Answer the quick 10 question survey and be in to win a $50 Aroha Local shopping voucher.

Insights from survey responses will be taken into account for our two Streets for People projects this year and future town centre regeneration work. The survey closes on Tuesday, 23 May 2023.

In September 2022, the council secured $1.27M of central government funding through Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency's 'Streets for People' programme for two town centre projects - streetscape improvements on central Guyton Street and a new public transport hub on lower St Hill Street.

Streets for People funding supports councils to work in partnership with their community to co-design streetscape projects that will:

  • improve public transport connections
  • enhance safety and convenience for pedestrians and cyclists
  • make our streets more inviting, people-friendly spaces.

The infrastructure used for these projects will all be semi-permanent (so that elements can changed or removed). Depending on community feedback over the course of the trial, some of the elements could eventually become permanent.

Funding from Waka Kotahi will cover 90 percent of the project costs, with the council covering the remaining 10 percent (largely from our business-as-usual road maintenance budget).

What's next?

With our initial co-design workshops complete for both projects, we’re now in the process of developing design concepts with Patchwork Studio. Community members will have a chance to review and give feedback on the initial design concepts at the following upcoming workshops:

  • Guyton Street draft design reveal Thursday, 4 May at 1.30pm and 5.30pm, Cooks Garden Event Centre (Peter Snell Room)

  • St Hill Street draft design reveal – Wednesday, 10 May at 1.30pm and 5.30pm, Whanganui War Memorial Centre (Pioneer Room)
