Wakefield Street Bridge replacement
- Project typeBridge replacement
- Project value$2.7 million
- Contractor nameTo be confirmed following procurement
- Completion Date30 June 2027
The existing Wakefield Street Bridge, built in the 1950s, has reached the end of its usable life and is no longer suitable for vehicle use. Replacement is the most practical and cost-effective long-term solution.
Following confirmed funding from NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (a 62 percent subsidy), the project will progress through detailed design, procurement, and construction phases to deliver a safe and resilient new bridge. The remaining 38 percent will be funded from the council's transport budget.
Benefits
- Restores a key transport link for Whanganui East residents and rural communities
- Improves safety for all users
- Supports local businesses and connectivity
- Provides a long-term, resilient infrastructure solution
Next steps
Now that funding is confirmed, a detailed design can be completed, along with the procurement (tender) process.
It is expected that construction will begin in late 2026, with the replacement project to be completed by the end of June 2027.
Road closures
The bridge remains closed to vehicles. Pedestrian and cyclist access is still available. Updates on any future closures or detours during construction will be provided closer to the start date.
Alternative traffic routes around the bridge via Tinirau Street, Holyoake Street, and Eastown Road have been implemented. Barriers and road closure signage have been installed before the bridge in both directions.
In response to community feedback regarding increased speeds:
- Additional speed restriction signage has been installed.
- A speed advisory/radar trailer has been deployed.
- Police have been advised and are monitoring the area.
