The new water supply pipes ready for installation

The water main on Surrey Road provides the water supply to surrounding residents and other areas of Springvale.

The current 1km main (from Chester Road to Parsons Street) has reached the end of its useful life and it needs to be replaced and upgraded to ensure continuity of supply to the Springvale area. The main will be replaced with a new 180mm PE (plastic) pipe using a directional drilling method, which means less disruption above ground.

This project is part of a wider programme of works within the council’s Long-Term Plan and Water Asset Management Plan to upgrade the level of service available through the water network.

This work will strengthen the resilience and performance of the local water network. Upgrading this section of main will reduce the risk of future disruptions, improve service reliability, and ensure the infrastructure can meet current and future demand in the Springvale area.

Lane closures

Lane closures will be in place during the main replacement. Traffic management and detours will guide people safely around the area.The work will be carried out in three stages. As each stage is completed, the closure points will move.

Residents, businesses, emergency services, and recycling/rubbish collections will still have access. Bus stops located inside the closure points on Surrey Road will be temporarily relocated to 3 Devon Road and 45 Devon Road.

Detours will change depending on the stage of work. The routes are:

Parsons Street→ Carlton Ave extension → Fitzherbert Avenue → Lincoln Road → Oxford Road → Surrey Road
Durham Road → Devon Road → Parsons Street → Lincoln Road → Oxford Road.
Oxford Road → Lincoln Road → Chester Road → Hereford Street → Durham Road → Devon Road → Parsons Street → Surrey Road
