Aramoho Bridge water main maintenance
From Monday 6 July, we will be carrying out maintenance on the water main attached to the underside of the Aramoho railway bridge.
The good news is that the shared pathway and railway bridge will remain open throughout the works, and there will be no interruption to the community's water supply.
The maintenance will help keep this section of pipe in good condition and reduce the risk of problems developing in the future.
While the work is underway, you may notice contractors, scaffolding, elevated access equipment and temporary signage around the bridge area. We've planned the project so people can continue using the bridge as normal while the work is carried out.
What work is being done?
The water main attached to the bridge carries water between Aramoho and Whanganui East.
Over time, exposure to the elements can cause wear and tear on the outside of the pipe. This work will focus on treating areas affected by corrosion and protecting the pipe so it can continue serving the community for years to come.
Work on the Aramoho side of the bridge will involve scaffolding and elevated access equipment positioned near the river, while work on the Whanganui East side can be carried out from ground level.
Looking after Te Awa Tupua
We know the awa is a special and important part of our community.
Care has been taken to plan the work in a way that protects the river and surrounding environment. Protective wraps and containment measures will be used to capture any loose material generated during the works and prevent it from entering the awa.
We're also working alongside hapū representatives to help ensure environmental and cultural values are respected throughout the project.
Separate from the shared pathway project
We know many people are interested in the future of the Aramoho Bridge shared pathway and may wonder if these works are connected.
They aren't.
This project is focused solely on maintaining the water main attached to the bridge and is separate from the proposed shared pathway replacement project.
We continue to work with NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) on funding options for a replacement shared pathway and will keep the community informed as that project progresses.
