Durie Hill Elevator - temporary closure

On display until 30 June 2026, 12:00 AM

The 106-year-old Durie Hill Elevator has closed earlier than expected ahead of scheduled annual maintenance – and for a longer period – while a potential mechanical issue is diagnosed and options for a solution found.

The elevator’s maintenance team, working with WSP and outside specialists, has identified issues with a back-up safety system. On specialist advice, the elevator has been advised to close until the issue is fully diagnosed and addressed. At this stage the length of the closure is unknown until further assessments are made.

Whanganui Connection will run a replacement shuttle during regular weekday hours of 7.30am-6.00pm, and weekend hours of 9.30am-5.00pm.

Whanganui Connection’s Anthonie Tonnon says ‘our team is grateful that our maintenance team has been working proactively and we were able to catch a potential issue well ahead of time, and just ahead of our annual maintenance shutdown. We are now experienced at running our replacement shuttle, and we will get this up and running for as long as it is needed.’

The shuttle travels between each entrance (2 Blyth Street and 42 Anzac Parade). It takes bikes, and accepts cash, Eftpos and your existing concession tickets. You can also call or text the shuttle ahead at 022 318 8537
