The repaint of the Whanganui Regional Museum has been completed on time and within budget, ensuring the building’s heritage is preserved for the community and future generations.

The project was led by Allan Tong Limited, with quality assurance provided by Gerald Cogan of BSM Architects. Scaffolding was installed by Scafit, sandblasting carried out by Edmonds Industrial, and updated signage supplied by Speedy Signs. Dalgleish Architects Ltd worked with the museum to develop the new colour scheme.

The council acknowledges the dedication of these contractors, along with the wider project team, whose work has safeguarded and refreshed a valued cultural landmark.

The council’s project manager, Natalia Lessa, said the repaint has not only improved the building’s presentation but also ensured it meets modern standards while respecting its heritage character.

“The museum is a cornerstone of our community, and it’s been fantastic to see so many people working together to honour its history while preparing it for the future. We’re very proud that this important work has been achieved efficiently, collaboratively, and within budget,” Natalia Lessa says.

The council’s chief strategy officer, Sarah O’Hagan, says the result reflects strong collaboration between the council, contractors, and partners.

“Delivering a project of this scale on time and within budget is a significant achievement, particularly with a heritage building. It demonstrates the professionalism and commitment of everyone involved. The museum is not only a cultural taonga but also a source of pride for our city, and this project ensures it will continue to be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike,” says Sarah O’Hagan.

The refreshed exterior of the Whanganui Regional Museum now reflects both its historic significance and its ongoing role as a vital cultural hub in the city.
