Whanganui East Pool preparing to open for summer

Maintenance work is being carried out at Whanganui East Pool as staff prepare to open it for the summer season.
Whanganui District Council Aquatics Services Manager Lucy Thompson says the team is looking forward to welcoming the community back once final works are complete.
“Contractors are currently repairing pipework and completing essential checks to ensure the pool can open safely,” Thompson says. “Each season we work within a tight timeframe, and this year the later decision to open the pool has reduced the time available to complete overdue maintenance ahead of the season.
“While we’re not yet in a position to confirm a definite opening date, we are hopeful the pool will open by Saturday, 20 December, which is in line with typical seasonal opening timeframes.”
The Whanganui East Pool complex has a 33-metre outdoor pool, a learner pool, an open-air hydroslide and barbecue facilities.
Thompson says, “At this stage, we’re unable to confirm whether the hydroslide will be open at the start of the season, as final safety checks are still being completed. We’ll share an update as soon as this is confirmed.”
From 5 January next year the pool will operate on an extended Tuesday–Sunday schedule (public holidays will be closed), with opening hours of:
- Tuesday–Wednesday: 11am–5pm
- Thursday–Sunday: 11am–6pm
“For opening days and hours prior to 5 January 2026, we encourage the community to check the Whanganui District Council website or the Splash Centre Facebook page,” says Thompson. “These will be updated as soon as dates are confirmed.”
“Earlier this year, community consultation highlighted how important Whanganui East Pool is to local recreation,” says Thompson. “Funding has been set aside for future refurbishment of the pool and its buildings, and we look forward to delivering these improvements over time.”
“With schools finishing soon and some absolutely sweltering days already, we know people will enjoy having the pool open again soon,” says Thompson. “Our operational team is ready to go as soon as the remaining maintenance and safety checks are completed.”
