The Local Government Commission (LGC) has issued its final determination on Whanganui’s representation arrangements for the 2025–2028 triennium.

Whanganui will remain represented by 12 councillors: 10 in a general ward and 2 in a Māori ward, both covering the entire district. The Whanganui Rural Community Board will also be retained to continue advocating for our large rural population.

After considering appeals, the LGC has decided to reinstate the 2019 boundaries for both the Whanganui subdivision - which extends into the district's upper reaches and is known for its isolated character - and the Kaitoke subdivision.

While the council had proposed reducing these areas to meet regulatory requirements, the LGC concluded this would compromise the communities of interest. It determined that the original boundaries better reflect the needs of the community, ensuring the Whanganui and Kaitoke subdivisions remain cohesive and properly represented. The Kai Iwi subdivision will follow the adjustments proposed in the 2024 review.
