Three major opportunities are now open for applications at Te Whare Tūhua o Te Ao New Zealand Glassworks (NZG) in Whanganui, with support from Creative New Zealand (CNZ) and The R Trust.

For 2026, artists are invited to apply for the Artist in Residence (AiR) programme, the emerging artist Internship programme, and the Professional Mentor roles. These are great opportunities for the glass community at every stage of practice, from emerging artists to seasoned professionals.

NZG manager Madeline Prowd says the programmes continue to build on the successes of past years. “Residencies and internships not only give artists the chance to focus fully on their practice, they also invigorate the studio with new ideas, energy and collaboration. It’s been amazing to see how past participants have grown and contributed to the wider glass community,” she says.

The 2025 AiR was awarded to artist George Agius, who used her time at NZG to expand her work to a larger scale. In the same year, interns Nathan Moore and Bindi Nimmo trained under the guidance of Professional Mentors; Katie Brown, Elizabeth McClure, George Agius, Madeline Prowd + Lewis Batchelar, describing the experience as transformative for their careers.

For 2026, New Zealand Glassworks is opening applications for three key opportunities in the glass community. The AiR (6 Jul to 2 Aug 2026) is open to one mid-career/established NZ Artist who utilises glass as their primary medium. The successful candidate is offered extensive studio access, accommodation, a stipend, support from a gaffer and interns, along with an accompanying solo exhibition in early 2027, applications close on 17 Oct 2025.

The Internship Programme (27 Apr to 30 Oct 2026) will select two emerging glass artists for a six-month placement, combining intensive hands-on skills training, mentorship, professional development, and a paid stipend, with applications closing 24 Oct 2025.

Experienced glass artists are encouraged to apply for the Professional Mentor roles (27 Apr to 30 Oct 2026) to guide and teach the interns, with all hours paid; applications close 24 Oct 2025.

NZG Manager Madeline Prowd says investment from Creative New Zealand ensures the programmes have a lasting impact. “New Zealand Glassworks is nationally recognised as the centre for glass. With this support, we can continue to nurture talent, educate and create a sustainable sector long term.” she says.
