Whanganui’s gas network company GasNet has secured major contracts in the Bay of Plenty which will significantly expand the business.

Mayor Annette Main and Whanganui District Council Holdings Ltd Chair Matthew Doyle today announced that GasNet has secured agreements to provide gas network infrastructure to several major new subdivisions in Papamoa, near Tauranga.

Mr Doyle said that GasNet is installing about 4km of arterial main, running from a major transmission main through new routes past the new subdivisions, enabling the company to service one of the fastest growing areas of development in New Zealand.

“GasNet currently has about 10,000 connections in Whanganui and the addition of the Papamoa developments represents a significant increase in the business,” Mr Doyle said.

“Many of the developments are in the government’s new ‘special housing areas’ but other opportunities are also opening up outside those areas. There are also potential opportunities to move into the Auckland market. In this way Whanganui can benefit economically from the growth in these areas.

“GasNet has worked closely with the developers to enter the Bay of Plenty market and offer a better, more cost-effective service to the Papamoa subdivisions.”

Mayor Main, who is also a Director of Whanganui Holdings, said the move into Papamoa was the result of great foresight by GasNet and the excellent service the company was able to provide.

“This is wonderful news for a long-established Whanganui business and proves that the service we can provide from Whanganui can surpass that of larger, multi-national companies,” Mayor Main said.

“GasNet is a relative minnow in the industry - it is currently the smallest gas operator in the North Island with 3-4% of the market. But it is now successfully competing with First Gas which took over the Papamoa gas network from Vector and GasNet is now the preferred provider for a number of big developments in that area.”

GasNet has secured agreements with the developers of the Golden Sands and Terrace Views developments, with others at various stages of progress.
