Deputy Mayor Hamish McDouall encourages people to have their say on the proposed Dog Control Policy 2015 and the Dog Control Bylaw 2015 before the submissions close on Friday, February 20.
“There’s a lot of collective wisdom and experience within the community which we want to hear to enhance the Council’s decision making around the proposed policy and bylaw.
“I encourage everyone, whether they own dogs or not, to have their say on how they think the Council should deal with the welfare and safety of dogs.”
The main difference between the existing Dog Control Policy 2008 and the proposed policy is that the proposed policy will require dogs to be on a leash at all times in public areas, unless they are in designated exercise areas.
The bylaw limits dogs to a maximum of three per household in the urban area, unless the occupier has obtained an exemption licence from Council, and enforces tougher infringements on dog owners who don’t comply with regulations.
