Mayor Annette Main says the Wanganui District Council is keeping a close watch on the weather forecast and river levels following the MetService’s prediction of heavy rain overnight on Wednesday.

“The MetService has warned of the likelihood of a relatively short burst of heavy rain in the headwaters of the Whanganui River tonight,” Mayor Main said.

“We are keeping in contact with Horizons Regional Council on river level predictions in case of potential issues. Currently the predicted rise in river level is not of concern; however, our Emergency Management team is monitoring the weather and we have staff on standby in case they are needed.”

The rain is expected to cause further slips on roads around the district and roading crews and equipment will be withdrawn from some areas on Wednesday afternoon for safety reasons.

Residents are advised to stay up to date with the forecast and avoid non-essential travel.
