The Wanganui District Council today adopted the Fires Bylaw 2015, which will assist in preventing the spread of fires by regulating the use of outdoor fires and other fire hazards.

The main amendment from the previous bylaw is the Council’s authority to declare a prohibited fire season in the urban area of the district during extreme fire conditions, such as hot, dry weather.

The bylaw also specifies the types of fires allowed in urban areas under normal conditions and whether they require a permit from the Council.

Under normal conditions, traditional cooking, such as hangi or umu, incinerators, barbeques and fires within braziers are exempt from requiring a permit as long as they are under continuous supervision.

When the Council declares a prohibited season, no open air fires of any kind will be permitted.
