The Wanganui District Council is delighted that $480,000 has been approved for work on the seismic strengthening and seating refurbishment of the Royal Wanganui Opera House.
The Lottery World War One Commemorations, Environment and Heritage Committee has approved $400,000 toward the cost of seismic upgrade, which is a third of the total cost of the work.
The aim of the Committee is to contribute to the promotion, protection and preservation of New Zealand’s natural, physical and cultural heritage.
Mayor Annette Main says the focus of the application was preserving our magnificent Opera House for continued use by current and future generations.
“We are very pleased that the application met the criteria and I want to thank the Committee for acknowledging the importance of one of the most historically important buildings in our district.”
The Lottery Community Facilities Fund approved $80,000 for a separate application for funding towards refurbishing the seating at the Opera House, which will be undertaken during the seismic upgrade project.
