Durie Hill lookout design concept

Whanganui District Council is asking for community feedback on the concept plan for improvements to the Durie Hill lookout and surrounding area.

The concept plan for the lookout and surrounding area has been developed following a $100,000 donation from Mars Petcare earlier this year (2021) towards the upgrade. An additional funding amount of $80,000 has been set aside from year two of the council's Long-Term Plan 2021-2031 to support the project. Construction work on the lookout is expected to start from 1 July 2022.

The main idea for the Durie Hill lookout concept is to create a unique landmark that:

  • Takes full advantage of the lookout views
  • Is associated with the site’s heritage and creates a sense of place
  • Includes features that respect and reference Tangata Whenua heritage
  • Includes facilities that support rest, recreation and picnic-type activities for visitors
