Recycling

The Whanganui Resource Recovery Centre is a one-stop shop for resource recovery and waste minimisation in the Whanganui District.

Whanganui Resource Recovery Centre opened in August 2013, replacing the Peat Street Recycling Centre.

The centre is open 24/7 for dropping off the following recyclable materials:

  • glass
  • plastics - numbers 1, 2 and 5
  • cans - steel and aluminium
  • clothing
  • paper and cardboard.

During normal opening hours – Monday to Saturday 8.30am–4.30pm and Sunday 10.00am–4.00pm – you can also drop off tyres, waste oil, e-waste, whiteware, green waste, children's car seats ($5 to drop off, subsidised by the council and processed by SeatSmart), domestic batteries - both alkaline and rechargeable, car batteries, eco light bulbs, fluorescent tubes, toothbrushes and toothpaste tubes.
