Whanganui Mayor Hamish McDouall has been in talks with government departments to offer the district’s support following Monday’s devastating earthquake.
“During this week I have had discussions with politicians and government departments about ways in which Whanganui can support those affected by the earthquake,” Mayor McDouall said.
“I have offered our full support to help in any way we can. One way in which Whanganui has considerable capacity to assist is in offering temporary office accommodation to organisations in Wellington that are unable to return to their premises as a result of the earthquake. We have a number of vacant earthquake proofed buildings that I am confident can be made available and that would be suitable accommodation for displaced organisations and businesses.
“Our district has had its share of emergency events in recent years and we remain grateful for the support and assistance received from throughout New Zealand during those times. Now it’s our turn to pay it forward by offering whatever assistance we are able to provide to those affected by the Kaikoura earthquake.”
