Environment Minister Hon. Amy Adams has congratulated the Wanganui District Council on its ‘exceptional’ resource consent processing.

In a letter to Mayor Annette Main, the Minister notes that in the 2012/13 period the Council processed all of its resource consents within the statutory timeframe set by the Resource Management Act.

“The Government is creating a resource management system that is more certain, less costly and enables growth, while protecting core environmental standards which are critical to New Zealand. Your Council’s excellent performance in processing consent applications on time, contributes to the achievement of this goal.”

Mayor Main said staff involved in the consent process had done an outstanding job to meet the statutory timeframes.

“They are daily trying to balance an applicant’s desire to carry out some kind of development, from a minor improvement to their property to a large-scale new development, against the requirements of the Act and the District Plan. Meeting those statutory timeframes can often be a challenge and I congratulate our staff on their ability to work with the applicants to create a win-win for all, while also meeting their statutory obligations.”
