Mayor Annette Main says she is pleased to see strong economic growth in both the commercial and residential sectors in our district.

“In the last financial year our rating information has shown that our district has experienced an overall growth of more than $61M, the largest increase we’ve seen in 10 years. This investment shows the confidence that businesses and people have in Whanganui.

“We’ve seen commercial growth throughout the whole district, but in particular in new developments such as the Briscoes and Rebel Sports complex, the new Farmers building and in the two new service stations recently built.”

Mayor Main says the residential sector has also grown, with over $37M growth from 49 new houses as well as improvements to existing homes.

“The economic growth means the Wanganui District Council is able to set lower rates than initially signalled in the 10-Year Plan.”

The overall rate increase will reduce from 4.1 percent to 3.8 percent while the residential rate will decreased from 3.7 percent to 3.5 percent. The commercial rate will decrease from 5.1 percent to 3.9 percent and the farming rate from 7.9 percent to 7.4 percent.

“In a country where residential housing is becoming increasingly unaffordable, I am pleased to say we live in a district where, not only is our commercial sector growing, but ordinary people can afford houses.

“While this is only early days in terms of economic growth, it’s a great start and the Council’s economic development arm, Whanganui and Partners, will continue the work it has been doing to bring more businesses and innovation to our district. The whole community benefits when we see sustainable growth.”
