Mayor Andrew Tripe has today acknowledged the resignation of Whanganui District Council chief executive David Langford, who will be returning to the United Kingdom later this year to take up a senior leadership position with Nottinghamshire County Council.

"Whanganui has been extremely fortunate to have his talent for as long as we have. He has made a significant contribution to Whanganui over the past three and a half years, and while I am personally saddened to see him go, I completely understand and support his decision to take up this new opportunity," says Mayor Andrew.

Langford has accepted the role of Director of Highways, Transportation and Waste Management with Nottinghamshire County Council – a region of more than 1.2 million residents. He will be part of the executive leadership team leading the transformation of multiple local councils into a new unitary authority.

"David’s leadership has been instrumental in driving forward major infrastructure, strategic, and organisational improvements for our district," says Mayor Andrew. “He has consistently demonstrated professionalism, vision and a deep commitment to public service. Our strong mayor – chief executive partnership has enabled real momentum in delivering for Whanganui."

“David is destined for a big career, so I fully understand and respect his ambition to broaden his experience in a larger system and contribute to a major national reform process in the UK.”

Langford’s final day with Whanganui District Council will be Friday, 17 October 2025. Recruitment for a new chief executive will commence shortly, with a focus on maintaining strong organisational leadership and continuing the progress achieved under Langford’s tenure.

“On behalf of the council, I want to sincerely thank David for his service to Whanganui, and wish him and his family all the best for their return to the UK.”
