Now local to Whanganui, for many years Lorene Taurerewa occupied the same corner table of the Riviera cafe in Brooklyn, New York almost every day – drawing. What emerged was a visual collection of thoughts and feelings – committed to paper in black ink.
Taurerewa can recall the feelings and emotions elicited by each individual drawing – even if they have been tucked away in a box for years; “.. I can literally remember how I was feeling emotionally by looking at them today.”
This daily ritual became a communion with the vastness of the inner world; converging these long-held memories and emotions, fragmented, reformed and then summoned up again through the process of drawing.
These smaller offerings presented as moving-image and subliminal pen-drawings accompany large-scale, hauntingly epic charcoal figurations. Together, these works take the unseen and make it seen in the formation of a strangely beautiful manifestation- The Waking World.
